Financial Finesse Series

Part 3: Nothing personal

Separating business, home, and personal identity can be difficult for women entrepreneurs because you have so much of yourself wrapped up in what you do for a living. Running a business tends to be all-consuming and it can be hard to tell where you stop and your business begins. And, not just in terms of your emotional investment. Your personal and company finances can also get mixed together if you’re not extra careful. Our goal in this article is to have you understand some of the reasons you should separate your business and personal finances and give you a few tips to help you get organized.

March business tip

How do you navigate a business?

The same way you plan a journey. Consider what you need to begin your trip, where you're starting from, where you want to go and how you will get there. You've already begun by examining and testing your business idea and your assumptions about your market, your customers and your own expectations.

A purposeful strategy will save you time and money. You'll also have an advantage over other businesses that haven't taken the time to even look at strategy. What can you design for your business? If you are starting on a limited budget, spending time on this step may also help you reduce expenses.

Think of things like:

  • niches for your business
  • better ways to serve your customers
  • smarter business formats

Creating a strategy encourages you to examine positive and negative factors that might affect the path you choose. It helps to identify some of the obstacles you may face during your journey.
