Best Small Business Opportunities 2007
Discover the best business opportunities for starting a small business
When it comes to the best business opportunities, contradiction is the key word for 2007. While we’ll see ever-increasing conspicuous indulgence, buying patterns will also reflect more of an emphasis on health than ever before. The best business opportunities of 2007 are those opportunities that meet people’s needs on one end of the scale or the other. Here, in no particular order, are predictions for the best business opportunities for 2007, business opportunities with the best potential for profit and growth.

Creating Your Business Guide Coaching Sessions
Beginning January 2007 in Vancouver, Victoria and Toll-free across BC
Any woman entrepreneur can tell you that launching a business is not so much about start-up as it is about creation. A new business is an awful lot like an infant, and its mother is just as concerned about making sure her ‘baby’ has everything it needs to grow and succeed.
Women's Enterprise Centre is offering complimentary coaching sessions to support women as they complete
the Creating Your Business learning guide. Face-to-face sessions are available in Vancouver
and Victoria and telephone sessions are available for women around the province.
Sessions will be held every two weeks and each session will focus
on a different step in the Creating Your Business Guide. Sessions will offer guidance from a business advisor as well as peer support. For more information on these coaching sessions, a session schedule and to register, click here

Mentoring Eases the Transition to Self-employment
Mentoring programs for women entrepreneurs March 2007
Whether they’re coming at it from employment, retirement, stay-at-home parenting or unemployment, starting a business can be a little intimidating for anyone. ‘Why?’, was the question posed recently to entrepreneurial women from across BC, who came together in seven cities to discuss the barriers they face when entering self-employment. Organized by Women’s Enterprise Centre, these groups explored the issues around women transitioning to entrepreneurship. Their candid disclosures will form the basis for a comprehensive mentoring program to be launched in March 2007.

Wanted: Women Entrepreneurs for Mentoring Program
Are you an experienced woman entrepreneur ready to be a mentor?
It is clear that women prefer and learn best from the wisdom and experience of each other. Women's Enterprise Centre knows there is big demand for mentors, but what we don’t know is how much interest lies on the other side of the fence from 'potential' mentors. Please take five minutes to complete a short questionnaire that will help us mould a mentoring program that works not only for mentorees, but also for the special women who become their mentors. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please leave your contact information with us in the space provided at the bottom of the survey.

Are
Women Shortchanging Themselves?
By Paul Lima, The Globe and Mail
'Equal pay for equal work." Anyone who is familiar with the fight
for pay equity knows that expression. While the issue is not yet
resolved, women have come a long way in the fight for pay parity
with men. But as more people start their own businesses, women have
encountered a new gap. It seems that women, who have fought hard
for pay equity, shortchange themselves when they launch their
own businesses. Compared with men, they typically charge less
and their businesses generate less revenue. They are doing to themselves
what the corporate world has been doing to them for ages - undervaluing
their worth.

An Entrepreneur’s Journey
Think you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur?
Many of us wish we were a succesful entrepreneur, but do we know the skills necessary to build a successful business? Robeez founder Sandra Wilson and Dean Barbour, director of Business Development for BC Urban Entrepreneur Development Association, offer their insight on developing a business idea and becoming a successful entrepreneur. Barbour believes that self-employment training is beneficial and suggests that anybody considering starting a business take a self-employment info session to avoid making crucial mistakes. Available info sessions can be taken through Small Business BC, Be Your Own Boss and Women’s Enterprise Centre.

To many people, strategic planning is something meant only for big businesses, but it is equally applicable to small businesses. Strategic planning is matching the strengths of your business to available opportunities. To do this effectively, you need to collect, screen and analyze information about the business environment. You also need to have a clear understanding of your business - its strengths and weaknesses - and develop a clear mission, goals and objectives.

A good business plan is an invaluable tool for any business owner, whether you are just starting your new enterprise, expanding or changing strategic direction.
