Connections Count!

Even more than ever, especially in these economic times, connections and relationships are so important. No amount of cold calling, sales promotions, or advertising will equal the amount of business you will get from someone who knows you, trusts you and will recommend you to their customers.

It’s relationships that will get us through any tough time and it’s relationships that will make or break our businesses. Have you connected with your clients recently? Just to say hello and to remind them that you are still IN business?

I can hear some of you say that you can’t afford to connect with everyone. Can you afford NOT to? Apathy plays a big part in today’s business world – companies don’t care, so employees don’t care and as a result, customers don’t care. When was the last time you heard from your grocery store that they appreciated your business? Do you have a loyalty to any particular store? Why?

Chances are it’s because a person, yes, a living person, took the time to help you, advise you or thank you. I used to go to a certain office supply store for my printing needs because Alice worked there. Alice made it her job to be knowledgeable in all things regarding printing, took the time to ask the questions that would ensure that my job was done correctly the first time AND if I had a rush job, she always found some way to get it done for me. Yes, there was a store that was closer to me, yes, there were other printers that I knew through networking but Alice was the only one who made me feel special – that my business meant something to her. She didn’t own the company, she was an employee that got paid by the hour.

Aliceno longer works there. The person who replaced her is not as knowledgeable, doesn’t look me in the eye when she’s talking to me, doesn’t ask questions, and tells me no matter what the job is – it won’t be ready until tomorrow. I’ve changed printers.

How did I find my new printer? Through word of mouth. A referral.

No amount of cold calling, promotions or advertisements will generate any where near the number of new clients as your connections will.

It’s not what you know or who you know, it’s who knows you AND what you can do.
